In the Presence of Total Absence: The Void as Overwhelming Substance
Here I ask what it means to see absence as an inexorable, active force — to photograph the void itself at its most oppressive, where all contrast is drowned. I wanted to render nothingness not as a passive emptiness, but as a suffocating sameness: an endless, undifferentiated glow that smothers orientation, boundaries, and even the possibility of motion. The void was sculpted to deny the eye its footholds, becoming the landscape’s most visceral truth — and even photons, filtered through its length, arrive stretched thin, mute, and colorless. In this image, the lack of structure is the only structure, leaving the viewer helpless in disorienting vastness and suffocating ambiguity.
