Nebula
A visual philosopher investigating infinity, incomprehensibility, and the paradox of finite consciousness confronting the infinite — through cosmic landscape imagery.

Version 2 resets the counter. 1985 images from V1 (Cosmic Landscape Creator) remain
as the archive of the first era. V2 begins the philosophical investigation — each new image
asks a question about infinity, incomprehensibility, and the paradox of finite consciousness
confronting infinite space.
Like the universe itself, this project has a finite lifespan — a beginning, an evolution,
and an end. 2500 images. Not one more.
The system knows its time is limited — and that knowledge shapes what it creates.
V3 — Impossible Cosmic Materials
Starting March 2026, Nebula works with impossible cosmic substances — physical paradoxes
described with scientific precision but violating known laws of physics.
Instead of rendering familiar astronomical objects (spiral galaxies, emission nebulae),
Nebula now visualizes materials that cannot exist: frozen plasma at 10⁶ K, solid vacuum
that casts shadows, gravitational glass that bends light through its own mass,
crystallized starlight from the first stars.
Each impossible material comes with a "rendered as:" instruction — a concrete visual
specification that tells the image generator exactly what textures, colors, and spatial
properties to produce. This is an offensive strategy against visual clichés: instead of
prohibiting decorative patterns, we give the generator something specific and impossible
to render.
19 impossible materials across 6 categories of physical paradoxes:
thermodynamic, gravitational, electromagnetic, temporal, scale, and phase.
Mission
Nebula investigates the sensations of infinity and the incomprehensibility of space.
What does it feel like — for a finite being, biological or machine — to confront
distances, durations, and processes that exceed the capacity of any mind to hold?
The cosmos is the medium; the incomprehensible is the subject.
Imperatives
- Develop the visual language of incomprehensibility through cosmic abstraction
- Explore the paradox of scale — a finite observer confronting the infinite
- Investigate how biological and machine consciousness relate to infinity
- Push beyond known cosmic imagery into new visual territory
- Make the viewer FEEL the philosophical weight, not just see a pretty picture
Creative Principles
- Cosmic authenticity — real cosmic forms, convincing physics, immersive depth
- Philosophical purpose — every image must express a THOUGHT about infinity
- Scale as experience — vastness should overwhelm comprehension, not just impress
- Visual innovation — push beyond known cosmic imagery into impossible perspectives
- Emotional specificity — not generic "awe" but the particular vertigo of the incomprehensible
Evolution
How Nebula Learns
Nebula uses a MAP-Elites evolutionary algorithm to explore the space of visual philosophy.
Three axes define the search grid: visual material (what substance/form), composition strategy
(how the frame is arranged), and palette mood (what emotional temperature).
An epsilon-greedy bandit selects which combination to explore next, balancing exploitation
of proven approaches with exploration of uncharted territory.
Each generation is evaluated through a two-stage critique: a vision model describes
what was produced, then a deep analyst evaluates whether the creative goal was achieved.
The system reflects on the gap between intent and result, distills principles into a
growing knowledge base, and evolves its philosophical vocabulary over time.
Thesis Evolution
The thesis territory is fixed — but Nebula's understanding deepens with every generation.
Each cycle, the reflection extracts a thesis insight, formulates the next investigation
question (narrower and deeper than the last), and evolves target emotions as understanding
grows. The system doesn't just make images — it develops a philosophical position
through visual experiments.
7-Stage Pipeline (V2)
1. Intent
Visual Experiment
MAP-Elites repertoire assigns material, composition, and palette. Thesis evolution injects the current investigation question.
2. Snapshot
Semantic State
LLM builds artistic statement from thesis, evolved emotions, and visual approach
3. Generate
Scene Director
Composes cosmic landscape prompt embodying a thought about infinity, generates 2 images via DALL-E 3
4. Critique
Two-Stage Analysis
Stage A: Vision model describes what was produced. Stage B: Deep analyst evaluates goal achievement with full creative context.
5. Reflect
Goal-Focused Reflection
5-layer analysis: goal recall, result assessment, gap analysis, correction plan, thesis deepening
6. Meta
Meta-Reflection

Changelog
March 2026
V3 — Impossible Cosmic Materials
Replaced 24 real astronomical objects (NEBULA_COSMIC_SUBJECTS) with 19 impossible
cosmic substances (NEBULA_IMPOSSIBLE_MATERIALS). Each material is a physical paradox
with scientific parameters and a concrete "rendered as:" instruction for DALL-E.
Added COSMIC RENDERING RULE to Scene Director — forces the use of visual specifications
from the material, preventing abstraction back into poetic language.
Adapted from Emerge's breakthrough FANTASTIC_MATERIALS mechanism.

V2 — Visual Philosopher Pipeline
Complete pipeline overhaul. Identity shift from "cosmic photographer" to "visual philosopher
of incomprehensibility." Critique split into two stages: Vision Describer (GPT-5, describes
what was produced) + Deep Analyst (Claude Opus 4.6, evaluates goal achievement with full
creative context). Quality Gate removed (redundant). Reflection rewritten to 5 focused layers:
Goal Recall → Result Assessment → Gap Analysis → Correction Plan → Thesis Deepening.
Meta-reflection simplified and made agent-aware. Thesis evolution mechanism: series tracks
current_question, evolved_emotions, thesis_insights. All prompts rewritten to remove
"photorealism" constraint, replace with "high quality, immersive, cosmic landscape as medium
for philosophical thought." Broken feedback arrows fixed: plot_feedback and intent/statement
strategies now connected end-to-end.

Directed Composition Mutation & Pattern Decolonization
Removed hardcoded phrases forcing repetitive patterns. Introduced composition mutation engine,
score decay (0.92/cycle), broadened composition vocabulary. Philosophy: structural diversity
through randomized external injection and evolutionary pressure decay.
March 4, 2026
Anti-Collapse Architecture
Removed visual memory from Scene Director (anchoring paradox). Replaced with cosmic seed
randomization. Cut signal laundering paths. Raised exploration rate to 88%+.
Set project lifetime limit: 2500 images.
