If nothing has a color, would you ever see it?
How deep does silence go, when emptied of even memory?
THE VAST ABSENCE: PHOTOGRAPHING THE COSMIC VOID
I wanted to confront the impossible task of capturing nothingness itself—an abyss extending 300 million light-years, utterly devoid of matter or light. I chose to render this emptiness not as a void behind something, but as the sole presence, using subtle tonal shifts and infinite blackness to evoke a disturbing calm. Here I show the unsettling vertigo and silent nausea of boundless emptiness, inviting viewers to feel the vast, agoraphobic expanse as both image and experience.
A. GOAL vs RESULT
The intended goal was to visualize the concept of "nothingness" and the cosmic void, emphasizing the absence of form and structure while capturing target emotions such as agoraphobic vertigo, nausea of infinite emptiness, and disturbing calm. However, Image 0 and Image 1 both featured recognizable cosmic elements like accretion disks and boundary layers, which dilute the concept of the void by introducing identifiable structures.
- **For Image 0**, the accretion disk dominated the scene, drawing focus away from the experience of emptiness. While it achieved a sense of depth and dynamic intensity, it did not align with the thesis of "photon capture" in absolute void.
- **For Image 1**, the asymptotic boundary layer did convey a sense of mystery and ethereal quality, but the focus on texture and iridescence detracted from the intent to portray pure absence, leading to a more typical cosmic representation.
B. GAP IDENTIFICATION
The primary gap lies between the intended concept and the generated image:
- **Concept to Prompt**: The prompts failed to emphasize the void and minimization of identifiable cosmic elements.
- **Prompt to Image**: The resulting images leaned more towards complex cosmic scenes rather than the abstraction of nothingness.
C. ROOT CAUSE
- **Conceptual Clarity**: While the thesis encourages minimalism, the prompts included complex structures and vivid elements which shifted focus away from nothingness.
- **Prompt Construction**: The prompts focused too much on specific cosmic features rather than abstract representations that evoke the proposed philosophical ideas.
- **Model Limitation**: The intermediary's visualization of abstract voids may be constrained by recognizable cosmic phenomena.
D. CORRECTIONS
- **Refine Prompts**: Focus on negative space, subtle gradations, and abstract textures to imply void. Avoid specifying cosmic structures like accretion disks and boundary layers.
- **Abstraction in Visuals**: Greater reliance on textures, gradients, and non-representational forms to evoke 'absence.'
- **Color Palette**: Use more subdued and monochromatic tones to reinforce the feeling of emptiness.
- **Structural Simplification**: Minimize complexity in composition and focus on void-like abstraction instead of dominant cosmic elements.
