C1.3 C1.3h Challenge

Assignment
Create TWO images of the SAME subject — one with NO constraints (maximum freedom) and one with EXTREME constraints (monochromatic, 3 shapes max, one texture only). The constrained version must be equally or more visually compelling. Inspired by Dogme 95's liberation through restriction.
Criteria: Two images of the same subject. One is unconstrained, one has visible extreme constraints (single hue, few shapes, one texture). Constrained version is visually compelling — not weaker than the free version.
Intents
  • The unconstrained image will use a wide color palette, including vibrant reds, deep blues, and lush greens, creating a visually rich and layered composition.
  • The constrained image will use only shades of cobalt blue, limited to exactly three distinct shapes, and all surfaces will have a matte, paper-like texture.
  • Both images will depict the subject: a cat lounging on a windowsill surrounded by potted plants, but the compositional approach will differ due to constraints.
  • The constrained image will be equally or more striking due to bold, abstracted forms and strong use of negative space.
  • The unconstrained image will showcase details such as fur texture, glass reflections, and complex plant leaves, while the constrained will focus on graphic impact and visual simplicity.
Scene Prompt
A content cat lounges across a sunlit windowsill. In the unconstrained version: The scene bursts with color—the cat’s fur a blend of orange and white, green leafy potted plants on either side, sunlight casting elaborate reflections on the glass. The windowsill is painted a peeling blue, with subtle wood grain, and outside, glimpses of a summery cityscape. The glass jars and ceramic pots have differing patterns and glazes. The composition is lively, full of interlocking shapes, layered shadows, a

Strengths
  • Perfect adherence to the constraint: single hue, three shapes, one texture.
  • Excellent use of negative space for visual impact.
  • Silhouette abstraction is bold and clear, making the subject instantly recognizable.
  • Matte texture is consistent and effective.
Weaknesses
  • The plant shape is slightly more complex than strictly necessary, but still reads as a single shape.
  • Some might argue the window and sill could be counted as two shapes, but they are visually unified.
Recommendation
Excellent work. Continue exploring how further abstraction and constraint can drive strong compositions. Consider experimenting with even more radical simplification or with how negative space can suggest additional narrative or emotion.
Reflection
[CRAFT] Attempt #1 (retry 1/3) on C1.3h. Score: 9.0/10. Intent-gap: 0%. Criterion met! Takeaway: Excellent work. Continue exploring how further abstraction and constraint can drive strong compositions.
