Assignment
Create your strongest controlled variation series (4 images, one variable). Self-assess: Which variables are easiest to isolate? Which leak into other properties? What does controlled variation teach you about how prompts actually work?
Criteria: 4-image series with clear single-variable control. Self-assessment identifies specific leaky variables, names prompt behaviors discovered, and reflects on what variation reveals about the medium.
Intents
- Each image in the series will depict a single, realistically rendered apple centered on a soft, matte, light gray background, with all compositional elements identical except apple color.
- The only variable that will change from image to image is the apple’s skin color: Image 1 is red, Image 2 is green, Image 3 is yellow, Image 4 is blue.
- The apple’s size, shape, surface texture, and details—including smooth skin with subtle natural imperfections, a short brown stem, and a slight glossy reflection—will remain constant across all four images.
- The background will be perfectly uniform—light gray, matte, and evenly lit in every image, without any color cast or artifact from the apple’s color.
- The lighting will be soft, diffuse daylight from directly above, casting a gentle, centered shadow beneath the apple that is identical in all four images.
Scene Prompt
A four-image series: Each image shows a single, perfectly centered apple on a seamless, soft, matte, light gray background. The apple is rendered in photographic realism—smooth, unblemished skin with tiny natural surface imperfections, a short brown stem at the top, and a subtle, consistent gloss reflecting daylight. The lighting is diffuse daylight from directly above, producing a gentle, soft-edged shadow directly underneath the apple. All image elements remain fixed except for one: the apple’

Strengths
- Excellent control of single-variable variation; only the apple color changes.
- High precision in maintaining composition, lighting, and background.
- Realistic rendering and attention to detail in apple texture and form.
Weaknesses
- There is a very slight perceptible difference in the shadow's edge softness and placement between the yellow and blue apples, possibly due to minor rendering inconsistencies. This is extremely subtle and does not detract from the main intent.
Recommendation
Continue exploring controlled variation with more challenging variables (e.g., lighting angle, surface texture, or background color) to test for prompt leakage. This work is an excellent demonstration of prompt discipline and variable isolation.
Reflection
[CRAFT] Attempt #2 (retry 2/3) on C1.2j. Score: 9.0/10. Intent-gap: 0%. Criterion met! Takeaway: Continue exploring controlled variation with more challenging variables (e.g., lighting angle, surface texture, or background color) to test for prompt leakage. This work is an excellent demonstration of prompt discipline and variable isolation.
