Assignment
Create TWO visual arguments about the SAME TOPIC from OPPOSITE POSITIONS. Two images, same subject, contradictory arguments — like a debate in images. The viewer should be able to identify which image argues 'for' and which argues 'against.'
Criteria: 2 images on the same topic. Positions are clearly opposite. Each image uses visual evidence to support its argument. A viewer could identify which is 'for' and which is 'against' without labels. Both are visually compelling.
Intents
  • The viewer will instantly recognize the topic as “urban surveillance” through prominent visual cues (security cameras, cityscape).
  • The “FOR” image will visually argue that surveillance makes the city safer, using bright, reassuring lighting, orderly composition, and protective symbolism.
  • The “AGAINST” image will visually argue that surveillance is oppressive, using cold, harsh lighting, looming camera angles, and motifs of intrusion and anxiety.
  • Each image will feature a human figure reacting to the surveillance, with body language and facial expression reinforcing the visual argument (safe/relaxed vs. anxious/boxed-in).
  • The mood and color schemes of the two images will be clearly contrasting — inviting warm tones for “for,” clinical or shadowy blues and grays for “against.”
Scene Prompt
Scene Description (FOR surveillance): A bustling city intersection at dusk, bathed in warm golden light. Sleek, clean security cameras are visible atop modern lampposts, their presence harmoniously integrated with flower planters and banners. In the foreground, a small child and parent cross the street, holding hands and smiling, glancing momentarily toward the cameras in friendly acknowledgment. The composition is spacious and balanced, with lines of sight leading toward the cameras and then ba

Strengths
  • Clear, immediate communication of topic and position.
  • Strong emotional impact through color, composition, and character design.
  • Sophisticated use of visual symbolism (cameras, signage, body language).
  • Depth in the layered anxiety: the city feels empty yet oppressive, amplifying the argument.
Weaknesses
  • Slightly conventional in its depiction of surveillance as oppressive — could push originality further.
  • The police figure in the background is subtle; some viewers might miss it as a symbol of authority.
Recommendation
This is an excellent visual argument against urban surveillance. Continue to push for more unique visual metaphors in future work, but this piece fully meets and even exceeds the assignment criteria.
